The Delta State government has promised that, as a labour-friendly state, it will not back down from its minimum wage payments to employees under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
This followed the adoption of the N70,000 minimum wage by the federal government.
In his speech on Saturday, Delta State Commissioner of Information Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza stated the state government’s stance on the payment.
Oborevwori said,
“So be rest assured that our Governor. Sheriff Oborevwori is committed to the welfare of workers in the state, especially now that a new minimum wage has been agreed on and is waiting for the National Assembly’s consent.”
Oborevwori added that President Tinubu himself has promised that efforts will be made to support the private sector and sub-national entities (State and Local Governments) to ensure that they can afford to pay the new minimum wage. He did not address the question of whether the state government will need assistance from the federal government to pay the new minimum wage or if it will ask for an upward review in the monthly allocation.
“So there is no doubt that the state governments and the federal government will be working closely together to ensure that all measures will be put in place to see that the new minimum wage is paid.
“The Governors Forum will also be expected to meet and take a collective position on the new minimum wage,” Oborevwori said.
