Nollywood actress Destiny Etiko has expressed concern over Nigerians’ enthusiasm for the new season of Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) despite the ongoing economic challenges in the country.

In a post on her Instagram page, Etiko highlighted the contradiction between the nation’s financial struggles and the public’s continued investment in entertainment.

Etiko noted:

E don red for our country, and I still dey see people dey happy about BBN. Hmmmm nawa o. Oh, una still get enough money for data, Abi? If you guys do not complain, who am I to do so? Am majorly concerned about the poor masses, though. That you can survive does not mean that everyone can o. Crime is now happening everywhere. Insecurity has become the order of the day, and everyone is literally calm. The earlier, the better.”

Her comments come amid widespread economic hardship in Nigeria, where rising prices and increased crime rates have significantly impacted daily life. Despite these challenges, many Nigerians continue to follow and engage with popular shows like BBNaija, raising questions about priorities and coping mechanisms during tough times.

Etiko’s post has sparked varied reactions online. Some users agree with her concerns, while others defend the need for escapism through entertainment.

One user commented, “She has a point. We should focus on addressing the country’s issues rather than getting distracted.”

Another wrote, “People need a break from the stress. BBNaija provides that distraction and some form of happiness.”

Destiny Etiko’s concerns echo similar sentiments expressed by other public figures in Nigeria. Weeks earlier, she applauded Nigerians for their resilience, noting that despite the economic situation, people still wake up with smiles and push through each day. She referred to Nigerians as the most patient people in the world, describing them as VIPs.

Similarly, talent manager Paulo Okoye had praised Nigerians for their patience, emphasizing how the government’s inefficiencies are often overlooked due to the citizens’ remarkable endurance.

The economic strain in Nigeria is also evident in the rising cost of living. Over the weekend, Caroline Danjuma, the ex-wife of billionaire businessman Musa Danjuma, shared her frustration over exorbitant food prices during a market visit. Similarly, actress Nkechi Blessing Sunday lamented spending N150,000 on a few foodstuffs at a market in Ogba, questioning how Nigerians are coping with the economic reality.

These sentiments highlight the growing concern among Nigerians about the country’s economic state and the daily struggles faced by many.

Destiny Etiko’s call to reflect on priorities during economic hardship is a reminder of the complex interplay between entertainment and everyday survival in Nigeria. While shows like BBNaija offer a much-needed escape, the underlying issues of economic instability and rising crime cannot be ignored.
