The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concern about the mistreatment of journalists by police personnel in Eagle Square during the #EndBadGovernance protest.
Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the commission’s executive secretary, issued a statement signed by Obinna Nwakonye.
According to the Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, the act violates their core human rights and is a clear attempt to stifle journalistic freedom.
He emphasised that journalists have a fundamental right to perform their responsibilities without fear of intimidation, harassment, or molestation.
He grieved that individuals who were abused did not deserve the treatment they received.
He believes that the police’s activities undercut democratic and legal values.
He said:
“We call on the Nigerian Police to respect the rights of journalists and protesters, and to ensure that their actions align with international human rights standards.”
