Darkness hits Rivers, Bayelsa as vandals destroy 13 TCN towers

Vandals have demolished thirteen Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV Double Circuits, resulting in months of blackouts in certain regions of Rivers and Bayelsa states.

TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed this in a statement issued Wednesday.

The TCN appealed the governments of Rivers and Bayelsa states to aid it in dealing with the continued vandalism of its facilities, which has grown increasingly serious and overpowering.

This comes after vandals previously wrecked the Ahoada-Yenagoa transmission line.

TCN said:

“Additionally, a new contract was recently awarded for the reinforcement of towers 19-31 on the Ahoada-Yenagoa line, where tower members had been vandalized and stolen.

“Despite these ongoing efforts, the recent vandalism of the thirteen towers presents a significant challenge to TCN.”

According to the company, the thirteen vandalized towers are located in a number of villages, including Okobe in Ahoada East, Emezhi 1 in Ahoada West, and Mbiama in Ahoada West Local Government Areas of Rivers State, as well as the Igbogene community in Bayelsa.

“Given the extent of the destruction to the towers and the ongoing work on previously vandalized transmission towers, it may take several months for TCN to complete the rebuilding and stringing of the towers to restore power supply to the state,” TCN stated.

TCN urged security forces and host communities to work together to combat escalating vandalism of important power facilities around the country.
