Constituents of Ondo State’s Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituency initiated a recall campaign on Monday against Abiola Makinde, the lawmaker who represents them in the National Assembly.
The constituents based the planned action on Makinde’s claimed abandonment of legislative responsibilities, claiming he had not been seen in the constituency or in the National Assembly.
Speaking under the aegis of the Ekimogun Roundtable, they said that the legislator moved overseas for unclear reasons.
According to the group’s acting secretary, Ms. Christiana Ayodele, in a statement, the lawmaker’s National Assembly office was kept under lock and key while the constituency had no representation in the National Assembly’s lower house.
Ayodele added that around 30 legal practitioners from throughout the country have shown an interest in providing free legal services to fight the lawmaker’s actions.
Ayode said:
“In a massive show of solidarity with what they described as an audacious leadership and legislative accountability project embarked upon by the Ekimogun Roundtable aimed at strengthening the country’s struggling representative democracy.
“Thirty legal practitioners from across the country and different spheres of the country’s legal profession have indicated interest in offering free legal services to the Roundtable in order to assist in its legislative inquiry and likely judicial processes.
“The House of Representatives member representing Ondo East/West Federal Constituency in the 10th National Assembly abdicated his legislative duties for months during the legislative session and relocated abroad with his National Assembly constituency office under lock and key, thereby rendering the entire constituency without representation for the period under review.”
