Justice Gumna Kaigama, the Chief Judge of Yobe State, has pardoned seven inmates from the Potiskum, Gashua, and Nguru correctional facilities in Yobe.
Kaigama, who is also the Chairman of the State Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee, granted bail to 14 people during his tour of the institutions on Monday.
Speaking at the event in Potiskum, the Yobe Chief Judge stated that the gesture aimed to decongest penal facilities.
He stated that six detainees were released from the Potiskum Medium Security Correctional Centre, and one from the Gashua Correctional Centre.
Kaigama informed the people that he would continue to work with the state Ministry of Justice to improve the condition of detainees.
Yobe Chief Judge urged judges and magistrates to follow the law when delivering their decisions.
Bala Kitsam, state Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service, praised the state government for its assistance to various prison facilities.
However, the Yobe Chief Judge asked the authorities to rebuild a deteriorating hostel at Gashua Custodial Centre.
Kitsam found congestion as the most significant issue in custodial facilities across the state.
The Yobe Chief Judge said:
“Potiskum Medium Security Custodial Centre with a capacity of 500 inmates, currently accommodates 786 inmates.
“Gashua Custodial Centre with a capacity of 104 inmates, now has 259 inmates, while Nguru Custodial Centre with capacity of 93 inmates, currently accommodates 151 inmates.”
