International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reports that 24,025 individuals are missing in Nigeria, the bulk of them are from the Northeast.
The Boko Haram insurgency, which has lasted over a decade and mostly affects the states of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe, is extremely concerning.
During an event commemorating World Day of Disappeared Persons in Maiduguri, Lillian Dube, Head of the ICRC’s Sub-Delegation Office, revealed that the cases were recorded in partnership with the Nigeria Red Cross Society (NRCS).
According to ICRC:
“We have registered 24,025 people as missing, a number that likely represents only a fraction of the actual total.
“More than half of these cases involved children at the time of their disappearance.”
She went on to say that 492 instances had been settled, and 1,364 families had received information on the whereabouts of their lost loved ones.
Currently, she noted that 618 separated children who are still looking for their family are being closely followed by the ICRC and NRCS, emphasizing that four separated or unaccompanied youngsters have been successfully reunited with their families.
