The Yobe State Government has laid to rest 34 victims of a devastating attack on the Mafa village, which is said to have been carried out by suspected Boko Haram militants.

The Mafa attack, which happened on Sunday, is being billed as the bloodiest in the state since the Boko Haram insurgency started 14 years ago.

Idi Barde-Gubana, the deputy governor of Yobe State, oversaw the burial and said the funeral prayers for the deceased.

During the ceremony, the deputy governor extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and promised that the state government would work closely with the federal government to maintain a military presence in the region to avoid future attacks.

In addition, the deputy governor directed the state emergency management agency to guarantee that those injured in the incident and those who were displaced were treated appropriately in hospitals and camps.

Eyewitness and physically challenged citizen Ali Abdullahi described the tragic events of the attack, saying that he was spared because of his condition, even though many people were killed and numerous stores were destroyed.

He said:

“It was Boko Haram that came to our Mafa community and killed several people. When they saw I have a disability, they asked me to go back. They suspect that we are the ones giving the military information to attack and kill them.”

Zanna Umar, a different Mafa local, stated that the death toll may reach 125.

“Here we buried 34, but there are others who have already buried their dead, about forty in number, and the rest will be buried tomorrow,” he described.

The Yobe State Government gave the impacted families N30 million in addition to the funeral.

In order to strengthen security and avert other tragedies, the deputy governor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working with security professionals to construct a military formation in the region.
