Ikeja Sexual Offenses and Domestic Violence Court has sentenced Niyi Oyerogbe to 14 years in jail for attempted sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl.

Following his plea agreement to the solitary revised charge of attempted sexual assault, Justice Rahman Oshodi sentenced Oyerogbe to 14 years in jail.

The prisoner was first charged with defilement on December 2, 2021, but when the prosecution introduced two witnesses, he agreed to a plea deal.

Dr Alagbe Oyedeji (PW1) and Insp Adaobi Iwerebor (PW2) testified, providing overwhelming evidence that strongly implicated the prisoner.

Documents A-E3 were submitted and accepted as exhibits.

The court ruled that Oyedeji’s medical examination of the 12-year-old prosecutrix discovered physical evidence indicating recent forceful vaginal penetration.

Oshodi in her ruling, said that the court was convinced that the defendant fully grasped the nature and seriousness of the criminal charge against him.

He believes that the basic components of attempting to conduct sexual assault by penetration have been demonstrated.

Oshodi said:

“The defendant’s guilty plea further justifies his conviction for the lesser offence delineated in the amended information.

“I find the defendant guilty and convict him under section 262 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

“I have carefully considered the facts of this case, the evidence presented and the terms of the plea and sentence agreement entered into by both parties.

“You assaulted a 12-year-old child sexually but have pleaded guilty to an attempt to commit the offence.”

The judge further remarked that the seriousness of the convict’s offense could not be emphasized.

According to him, the medical evidence given in the case shows bodily injuries that are consistent with forced penetration.
