The National Economic Council (NEC), which includes members of the Nigerian Governors Forum, has urged the presidency to remove the Tax Reform Bill from the National Assembly.

They made the plea, citing the need for more discussions and consensus among parties.

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, stated that this was part of the resolutions made during the National Economic Council meeting at the State House in Abuja.

Makinde added that NEC members agreed that it was vital to allow Nigerians to reach an agreement and comprehend the measure.

While the Federal Government believes the new legislation would improve efficiency and minimize redundancies in the country’s tax processes, the northern elites are opposed to them.

The amendments occurred as a result of a study of existing tax legislation that began in August 2023.

Recalls that the Federal Executive Council, recently presided over by President Bola Tinubu, approved new policy efforts to improve Nigeria’s tax administration operations.
