United States of Biafra: We’re not part of your ‘madness’ – Igala replies IPOB

The people of Kogi East have condemned the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, or IPOB, for including the Igala nation in its planned “United States of Biafra” without their permission.

The people of Kogi State’s Eastern Senatorial District, speaking through the Igala Youth Council, criticized the statement of “faceless individuals” attempting to portray the Igala nation as adversaries of a sovereign state such as Nigeria.

In a forceful statement issued during an emergency meeting on December 1, 2024, the organization stated that the viral video of IPOB describing their ambitions for a 40-state Biafran republic was not only ludicrous but also an overblown farce.

In a statement, the group’s national press secretary, Michael Achor Joshua, emphasized that the Igala nation was not consulted or asked to debate this idea, hence it opposes its inclusion in IPOB’s separatist agenda.

He emphasized that the Igala nation needs proper government for all of its people within Nigeria, rather than being drawn into IPOB’s “madness.”

His words are:

“It’s worth noting that IPOB’s actions have been a subject of controversy, with some viewing their agitation as a legitimate cry for self-determination, while others see it as a threat to national unity.

“The group’s methods, including the imposition of a weekly “sit-at-home” order, have been criticised for their disruptive impact on the economy and daily life in the Southeast region.”
