Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has criticized Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi over his visit to legal luminary Aare Afe Babalola.
This comes hours after Peter Obi’s private meeting with Afe Babalola.
On Monday evening, as part of his visit to Ekiti State, Obi met with the jailed activist Dele Farotimi in prison.
On Monday night, Sowore responded to the visit on his X account by writing:
“I condemn those who went to ‘beg’ Chief Afe Babalola today over unjust detention and persecution of DeleFarotimi. The delegation led by PeterObi did colossal injustice to the struggle to drain the swamp of judicial criminality in our country.
“Obi’s action is like forcing Rosa Parks to return to the back of the bus of racial injustice during the civil rights era in the United States! The struggle continues!FreeDeleFarotimiNow.”
A senior Yoruba politician allegedly coordinated Obi’s visit to try to reach a peaceful conclusion to the legal dispute between Babalola and Farotimi.
Farotimi, who was detained in Lagos on Tuesday, appeared in Ado-Ekiti magistrate court on Wednesday to face a 16-count allegation of defamation of character against Afe Babalola.
On Friday, December 6, 2024, the Nigerian police filed new cybercrime accusations against Farotimi in the Federal High Court of Ekiti.
On Monday, December 9, the Federal High Court granted Farotimi bail of N50 million.
As at the time of this article, his team was still working on perfecting the conditions of his bail.
