Following an agreement with the government about the ensuing changes to the minimum wage for workers, Nasarawa State’s organized labour has put an end to its indefinite strike.
At a joint press conference held Monday in the state capital of Lafia, the labour leaders announced this.
Recall that on December 1, a number of labour organizations, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), went on strike.
The strike was in accordance with the union headquarters’ order to begin in December if their governors did not enact the increased minimum wage.
“A template has been finalised for the consequential adjustments of the minimum wage for workers on Grade Levels 7 to 16,” they said.
Ismaila Okoh, the chairman of the NLC, stated during the press conference that the agreement was the result of lengthy talks with the state government and important stakeholder contributions.
Mohammed Doma, the leader of the TUC, stated that the new minimum wage, together with the agreed-upon modifications, will begin to be paid on December 1.
The workers’ tenacity, camaraderie, and nonviolent behaviour during the strike were praised by the labour leaders.
As a result, they instructed employees to take their duties seriously and return to their offices and duty stations right once.
