Nigerian Army announced that soldiers from the 6 Brigade, stationed at the Garba Chede checkpoint in Bali LGA, Taraba State, arrested a group of illicit miners and recovered suspected precious stones being moved out of the region.
According to Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director 6 Brigade Army Public Relations, the arrest was made possible after attentive troops seized a vehicle with the foreign registration number B 0515 VV on December 17 and discovered it to be concealing unlawfully mined items.
According to the statement, the suspected valuable stones were buried in sack sacks lined with dry grasses to avoid discovery.
The statement disclosed that Abubakar Suleiman, the truck’s driver, and eight other passengers were arrested right away by the police.
The statement said:
“Following standard procedures, they were handed over to the Taraba State Special Taskforce Committee on Environmental Protection, Public Safety, and Prohibition of Deforestation for further investigation and prosecution.”
Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, spoke about the arrest and gave his word that the Brigade will continue to support civil authorities in their efforts to enforce environmental standards and protect people and property.
He thanked the good people of Taraba for their unwavering support and asked them to notify security services of any suspicious activity so that they could take immediate action.
“Together, we can foster a safer and more sustainable environment in Taraba State and beyond,” he added.
