Defence Headquarters has confirmed the death of six Nigerian soldiers in a recent attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Borno State.

The deadly raid took place near the town of Malam Fatori, close to the border with Niger.

According to military reports, the insurgents ambushed the soldiers while they were on patrol, leading to a fierce gunfight. Despite the soldiers’ efforts to repel the attack, they were outnumbered and outgunned by the heavily armed militants. Several other soldiers sustained injuries and were evacuated to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s northeast, where ISWAP and Boko Haram continue to carry out attacks on military and civilian targets. Despite repeated claims of progress in counterinsurgency efforts, these groups have proven resilient, adapting their tactics to evade military operations.

The Nigerian Army has vowed to retaliate and intensify operations against ISWAP. A senior military official reiterated the commitment to safeguarding the region and eradicating insurgency. However, security analysts warn that a long-term solution requires not just military action but also addressing the socio-economic factors that fuel extremism.

Humanitarian organizations have expressed concern about the rising violence, which has displaced thousands of people in the region. They have called for increased support for victims and strengthened efforts to stabilize affected communities.

As Nigeria mourns the loss of its soldiers, the incident underscores the need for renewed focus and strategy in the fight against terrorism.
