The United Nations (UN) has strongly condemned the recent killing of 40 civilians in Dumba community, Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State, by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, in a statement on Wednesday, expressed horror over the attack, which targeted farmers and fishermen on January 12.

“I am horrified by the recent mass killing of fishermen and farmers in Kukawa. Several people remain missing following the attack,” Fall stated, calling for justice in line with national and international human rights laws.

The attack, reportedly carried out by suspected Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants, underscores the continued threats civilians face in Nigeria’s northeast.

The UN official extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a swift recovery. He also urged authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“This attack serves as another grim reminder of the profound dangers civilians in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states continue to face,” Fall emphasized.

The statement highlighted the frequency of violence in conflict-affected areas throughout 2024. Past incidents include the abduction of IDPs in Ngala in February, a deadly bombing in Gwoza in June, the killing of farmers in Firgi in July, and the mass murder of over 100 civilians in Tarmuwa LGA, Yobe State, in September.

The UN reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s humanitarian efforts and urged intensified measures to protect civilians and uphold human rights in the region.
