The death toll from Saturday’s devastating petrol tanker explosion in Niger State has climbed to 98, with 69 individuals injured and 20 shops completely destroyed, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).
The tragic incident occurred when a speeding fuel tanker lost control, spilling its contents onto the road. In a scramble to collect the leaking fuel, local residents were caught in a catastrophic explosion as the tanker ignited.
Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director General of NSEMA, provided an update on Monday, confirming the revised casualty figures.
“More deaths have been recorded from the fire incident. The latest figure is now 98 deaths, 69 injured, and 20 shops burnt down,” he stated.
The disaster has drawn widespread grief and condolences from across Nigeria. Former President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his sorrow over the significant loss of lives and property, emphasizing the need for safety awareness to prevent such tragedies.
Efforts to support victims and their families are ongoing as the state grapples with the aftermath of one of its deadliest accidents.
