The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, on Saturday led an enforcement team to ensure compliance with the Third Party Vehicle Insurance scheme in the state.

The exercise follows the directive issued by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, mandating all police commands nationwide to verify motorists’ third-party insurance certificates, effective February 1, 2025.

Azare, alongside senior officers of the Police Command, visited key areas in Uyo and Ikot Ekpene to oversee the enforcement. Speaking to journalists after the exercise, the commissioner expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance, attributing it to extensive sensitization efforts by the police and other stakeholders.

However, he confirmed that some vehicles were impounded after their owners failed to present valid insurance documents. He emphasized that such vehicles would only be released upon submission of the required papers within a given timeframe, warning that defaulters risk prosecution.

Azare reiterated that the enforcement exercise would continue until full compliance is achieved across the state.
