Shehu Sani condemns planned hike in electricity and telecom tariffs

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has strongly criticized the federal government’s planned increase in electricity and telecom tariffs, calling it unjustifiable and unreasonable.

His remarks follow the telecoms regulator’s recent approval of higher mobile tariffs and the government’s announcement that electricity tariffs would be raised in the coming months.

Sani described the proposed increments as burdensome for Nigerians, especially amid economic challenges. He called for an immediate halt to the plan, emphasizing that it would further strain households already struggling with high living costs.

The former senator also expressed his support for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its decision to protest against the tariff hikes. He described the planned demonstrations as a necessary response to what he termed an “unconscionable” move by the government.

Sani urged authorities to consider the economic impact on citizens and explore alternatives to imposing additional financial burdens.

“The planned increase in electricity tariffs in the midst of poor power supply and the proposal to increase telecom tariffs is unconscionable and should be halted. The scheduled labour union protest is a welcome development,” he posted on X.
