The Julius Abure-led National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP) has accused Governor Alex Otti of Abia State of engaging in anti-party activities and working to undermine the party ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
According to a statement jointly signed by LP National Chairman Julius Abure and National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the party alleged that Alex Otti is plotting to collapse the Labour Party in Abia before defecting to another political platform to pursue his re-election bid.
The NEC also condemned the formation of a Caretaker Committee reportedly established by Governor Otti and former presidential candidate Peter Obi during a stakeholders’ meeting held on September 4, 2024, in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
These were among the resolutions adopted during the party’s NEC meeting on Monday at the LP National Secretariat in Abuja. In accordance with Article 13 (A) of the party’s constitution, members of the National Working Committee, state chairmen and secretaries, other national officers, and stakeholders attended the meeting.
The NEC warned that Governor Alex Otti might face disciplinary action for alleged anti-party activities. It also commended the recent Supreme Court judgment affirming the supremacy of political parties in internal affairs and candidate selection processes.
