President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order aimed at overhauling the education accreditation system in the United States.
The signing took place in the Oval Office on Wednesday, marking another step in the administration’s push for broad education reforms.
Under the new directive, the US will establish alternative accreditation pathways and require existing third-party accreditors to move away from what the administration described as “woke ideologies,” focusing instead on merit-based evaluations.
The order will extend to law schools and graduate programs, signalling a significant shift in how institutions are assessed and approved.
US Education Secretary Linda McMahon welcomed the move, stating that the order would open doors for critical innovations in the sector. She noted that it would foster greater competition, improve transparency in college finances, and promote the integration of new technologies in classrooms.
“Today’s executive orders pave the way for critical innovations—inviting more competition in the higher education accreditation system, ensuring transparency in college finances, supporting new technologies in the classroom, and more,” she said.
In a related move, President Trump also signed another executive order on Wednesday to increase the use of artificial intelligence in K-12 schools and colleges.
Since the start of 2025, the Trump administration has signed more than 130 executive orders aimed at driving various reforms across sectors.
