At least ten individuals lost their lives when unidentified gunmen attacked a popular bar near the Okada Office in Akpehe, Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.
The assailants, suspected to be cultists, stormed the area around 8 p.m., opening fire on patrons and causing multiple fatalities and injuries.
The sudden and violent nature of the attack led to widespread panic, with residents fleeing the area as the gunmen continued to fire indiscriminately. The bar, known for its lively atmosphere, was left deserted after the assault.
This incident adds to a growing list of violent attacks in Benue State, highlighting the escalating security challenges in the region. Local authorities have been grappling with a surge in criminal activities, including cult-related violence and attacks by armed groups.
In response to the incident, security agencies have intensified patrols and launched investigations to apprehend the perpetrators. The state government has also reiterated its commitment to enhancing security measures and ensuring the safety of residents.
Community leaders have called for increased vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement to curb the rising tide of violence.
They emphasise the need for collective efforts to restore peace and stability in the affected areas of Benue State.
