Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has accused U.S. President Donald Trump of attempting to destabilise Canada.
Carney made the remarks during his victory speech after the Liberal Party secured its fourth consecutive term in the 2025 federal elections.
He claimed that Trump’s recent policies, including aggressive tariffs on Canadian exports and remarks suggesting Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, were deliberate attempts to undermine the country’s sovereignty.
Carney said these moves were intended to weaken Canada’s economy and national identity.
His strong stance against the U.S. President appeared to resonate with voters, fueling a wave of nationalism that helped carry the Liberals to victory.
He emphasised that the nature of Canada’s relationship with the United States has changed significantly.
As part of his administration’s priorities, Carney pledged to reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the U.S. by strengthening ties with European and Asian markets.
He also signalled readiness to confront the economic challenges brought on by the trade dispute with the U.S., stating his government would work to win the trade war.
Beyond international relations, the new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, promised to focus on protecting Canadian workers, preserving social programs, and ensuring national stability in the face of mounting global pressures.
