Lagos estate residents protest five-month blackout after N15m transformer donation

Residents of Victory Estate in Iba Town, Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State, have staged a protest over a power outage that has lasted for more than five months despite their contribution of N15 million to purchase a new transformer.

The residents, frustrated by the prolonged blackout, accused the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) of abandoning their community after they donated funds for a transformer to restore electricity.

They gathered on Sunday to express their anger, carrying placards with messages demanding immediate power restoration and accountability from the distribution company.

According to the community’s landlords and tenants association, the Lagos estate had been plunged into darkness since December 2024 after their old transformer became faulty.

In response, residents came together to raise about N15 million, which they used to buy a new transformer, cables, and poles in hopes of quickly restoring power.

However, the Lagos estate residents say the power supply has not resumed, and EKEDC has not made meaningful progress in connecting the new transformer to the grid.

A member of the association stated that several efforts to get EKEDC to act, including official letters and visits to their office, have yielded no result.

Residents lamented the impact of the blackout on their businesses, health, and daily lives, adding that many small business owners are struggling due to the lack of electricity.

They called on the Lagos State Government and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to intervene and hold the distribution company accountable.

They also urged EKEDC to respect their sacrifice and restore power to the estate without further delay.
