Popular Nigerian social media activist Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been released from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following his arrest in Abuja on Friday.
The arrest, reportedly due to multiple petitions and VDM’s failure to respond to EFCC invitations, ignited widespread public outcry and demands for his immediate release.
The EFCC stated that VeryDarkMan’s detention was linked to several petitions and his non-compliance with prior invitations. However, the manner of his arrest, which took place at a Guaranty Trust Bank branch in Abuja, drew criticism from various quarters, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who likened the operation to an abduction. Obi emphasised the need for transparency and civility in law enforcement actions.
Support for VDM’s release came from numerous Nigerians, including Afrobeat star Davido, who publicly demanded his freedom. Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore confirmed VDM’s release on Wednesday evening via a Facebook post, stating simply, “VDM Released!”
VeryDarkMan’s detention and subsequent release have sparked discussions about the rights of citizens, the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies, and the importance of due process.
As the situation unfolds, many are calling for greater accountability and adherence to legal protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
