Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has emphasised that political leadership should focus on delivering essential services to citizens rather than seeking personal prestige.
Speaking at the Rotary International District 9141 Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Osinbajo highlighted quality education, accessible healthcare, and robust social security systems as fundamental rights for every citizen.
Osinbajo drew inspiration from historical figures like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who introduced free basic education in Western Nigeria despite its financial challenges.
He noted that such policies exemplify selfless governance aimed at improving the lives of the populace.
Reflecting on his tenure, Osinbajo mentioned the development of the All Progressives Congress (APC) manifesto in 2014, which included debates on implementing strong social investment programs.
This led to initiatives like the national school feeding scheme and TraderMoni, designed to uplift vulnerable populations.
He also addressed the elite, urging them to assess whether their achievements were genuinely rooted in serving others.
Osinbajo called for better budget prioritisation and fiscal policies aimed at improving the lives of the nation’s most vulnerable populations.
Concluding his address, Osinbajo reiterated that true political leadership is measured by its ability to serve the people, particularly those in need, rather than by the prestige associated with holding office.
