The Northern Governors Forum has officially endorsed the establishment of state police as a strategic measure to address the escalating security challenges in the region.
This resolution was articulated in a communiqué issued after the Forum’s meeting on Saturday, May 10, 2025, and presented by its Chairman, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State.
Governor Yahaya emphasised the Forum’s call for the National Assembly to expedite the legislative process required to facilitate the creation of state police forces. He asserted that such a move would empower state governments to more effectively combat crimes such as insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping within their jurisdictions.
In addition to advocating for state police, the governors resolved to enhance interstate border surveillance and strengthen collaboration with the Nigeria Governors Forum to bolster national security efforts. The Forum also expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s initiatives aimed at addressing security challenges and infrastructural deficits across the country.
The meeting, which convened all 19 northern governors alongside state chairmen of traditional rulers, underscores a unified regional commitment to implementing localised security solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by their respective states.
