The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that its primary focus is on the upcoming 2026 governorship election in Osun State.
Dr. Mutiu Agboke, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Osun, made this known while addressing journalists on the commission’s preparations and strategies.
According to Agboke, INEC is committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election that will meet the expectations of the electorate.
He emphasized that the commission is already taking proactive steps to ensure the process is seamless and transparent.
Agboke stated that INEC is putting measures in place to strengthen the electoral process, including the training of personnel and upgrading of technological systems.
The REC noted that Osun State holds strategic importance to the commission, as previous elections in the state have been closely watched both locally and internationally.
He acknowledged that INEC has learned valuable lessons from past electoral exercises and is working on addressing the challenges previously encountered.
Agboke assured residents of Osun that the commission would be impartial and would put the interest of democracy first. In addition to logistical preparations, INEC is also engaging with key stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies.
Agboke explained that early stakeholder engagement is crucial to fostering a peaceful and conducive environment for the election. He reiterated that INEC is committed to involving the public in the electoral process to boost confidence and promote transparency.
Agboke also highlighted the commission’s commitment to voter education, stating that efforts are being intensified to encourage voter participation.
He noted that voter apathy remains a significant challenge in some parts of the state, and the commission is working on awareness campaigns to address this.
According to Agboke, educating voters about the importance of their participation is essential to achieving a successful electoral outcome.
The REC addressed concerns regarding potential security challenges, noting that INEC is collaborating with security agencies to ensure adequate protection of voters, officials, and materials during the election.
Agboke expressed confidence that with the combined efforts of all stakeholders, the 2026 governorship election in Osun would set a positive example for other states.
