The Nigerian government has announced plans to construct the Dasin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State as a strategic measure to reduce the recurring flooding caused by water releases from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam.
This long-awaited project is designed to serve as a flood control buffer and also offer added benefits such as irrigation, water supply, and hydropower generation.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev disclosed this development during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja.
He explained that the study and design phases for the Dasin Hausa Dam have already been completed, and efforts are now underway to procure a transaction advisor to facilitate the next stages of the construction.
Utsev emphasised the government’s commitment to addressing the serious impact of flooding, which often affects Nigerian communities whenever water is released from the upstream Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.
He noted that the Dasin Hausa Dam will not only help prevent these floods but also support agricultural development and energy generation in the region.
In a related effort, the federal government has also approved funding for the reconstruction of the Alau Dam in Borno State, which was previously damaged and caused significant loss of life and property. This underscores the administration’s dedication to resolving water-related challenges across the country.
Originally conceived in the 1980s, the Dasin Hausa Dam project was delayed for decades. However, the current administration is taking steps to accelerate its implementation through a Public-Private Partnership involving the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, the Ministry of Water Resources, and Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited.
Once completed, the multipurpose dam is expected to generate over 300 megawatts of electricity and irrigate more than 150,000 hectares of farmland across Adamawa, Taraba, and Benue States.
The Dasin Hausa Dam project is seen as a transformative initiative that will improve food security, promote economic development, and enhance climate resilience in the region.
