Nollywood veteran actress Rita Edochie has reignited the conversation around decency and morality in fashion following her reaction to a controversial outfit at Ruby Ojiakor’s wedding.
Rita Edochie, a respected figure in Nollywood, has openly criticized a guest’s choice of attire at her junior colleague Ruby Ojiakor’s wedding. In a viral video, the guest was seen wearing a revealing dress that displayed significant cleavage, sparking mixed reactions online.
Reacting to the video, Rita expressed her disapproval, emphasizing the symbolism of white weddings as a representation of “cleanliness, godliness, and purity.” She lamented the growing trend of indecent dressing at social events and questioned the example such behaviors set for younger generations.
In her statement, Rita said:
“White wedding signifies cleanliness, godliness, and purity, but the way people come almost naked these days is alarming. What will your children say seeing this on social media?”
The actress maintained her strong stance against indecency, declaring her zero tolerance for such dressing in her presence. She further called for collective efforts to promote a culture of modesty and respect in society.
Rita’s critique took a dramatic turn when fellow actress Nneoma Ukpabi, allegedly the individual in the viral clip, responded with sharp words. Nneoma warned Rita to refrain from mentioning her name and threatened to expose the veteran’s “dirty secrets.”
In a fiery rebuttal, Rita refused to engage in a war of words, citing her higher moral ground and clean track record. She accused Nneoma of attempting to distract from the core issue—her choice of attire—and referenced past controversies involving embezzlement within the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).
Rita stated:
“The truth doesn’t always go down well with people who are recalcitrant to advice and corrections. Your outfit for Ruby’s wedding was irresponsible and indecent. I’m saying it again: you are a bad influence and should not be mingled with.”
The veteran also dismissed Nneoma’s claims of media relevance, stating that her followership is “inorganic and purchased” and that the backlash was self-inflicted.
Rita Edochie’s firm stand on decency continues to spark debate within Nollywood and beyond, with many supporting her call for modesty while others question her methods.
