Eid-el-Kabir: Nigerians remember Mokwa flood victims — CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on Nigerians to remember and support the victims of the recent devastating floods in Mokwa, Niger State, as they celebrate this year’s Eid-el-Kabir. The floods, which struck in late May, caused significant destruction, submerging entire communities, killing over 200 people, and leaving more than 1,000 missing. Thousands of homes, roads, and critical infrastructure were destroyed in what has become one of the most tragic natural disasters in the region in recent years.

In a message delivered ahead of the Eid celebration, CAN urged the public not to allow the festivities to overshadow the pain and suffering of those affected. The association highlighted the spirit of Eid-el-Kabir—marked by sacrifice, compassion, and generosity—and encouraged citizens to embody these values by reaching out to the grieving and displaced.

Similarly, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State announced that the Sallah celebration would be observed in a low-key manner across the state as a mark of respect and mourning for the flood victims. He discouraged large public festivities such as the Durbar and other ceremonial gatherings. Instead, he called for a solemn observance focused on prayers, reflection, and acts of kindness.

President Bola Tinubu also offered condolences to those affected by the floods and emphasized the importance of national solidarity during such trying times. He encouraged citizens to demonstrate resilience by offering material support and spiritual encouragement to the victims.

As communities gather to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, CAN and government officials alike are urging Nigerians to go beyond the rituals and extend meaningful help to those in need. The Mokwa disaster serves as a stark reminder of the importance of empathy, preparedness, and communal responsibility, especially during festive periods.
