Your offerings should exceed tithes – Pastor Ibiyeomie

Pastor David Ibiyeomie, the founder of Salvation Ministries, has encouraged Christians to cultivate a generous spirit by giving offerings that exceed their tithes.

Addressing his congregation during a sermon, the prominent pastor emphasised that tithing—typically ten percent of one’s income—is just the beginning of a financial covenant with God and should not be the limit of a believer’s giving.

He described tithing as a fundamental practice for any Christian who desires to walk in divine prosperity. “Tithe is the foundation of your covenant to prosperity. Don’t wait until month end before you pay your tithe. Anytime you get money, pay ten percent back to God as a lifestyle,” he said.

Going beyond the tithe, Pastor Ibiyeomie urged his followers to also increase their offerings significantly. He shared that in his personal financial life, he gives no less than twenty percent of his income as offerings each month. According to him, this practice has played a major role in his own financial stability and abundance. “In a month, your offering should be bigger than your tithe. My offering, for instance—I don’t give less than 20 percent, that’s why I’m not poor. Increase your offering more than your tithe and you’ll never be broke,” he stated.

While his message has been embraced by some as a call to deeper spiritual discipline and generosity, others have raised concerns. Critics argue that advocating for a combined giving of 30 percent of income could be burdensome for many believers, especially in a country where the cost of living is high and economic uncertainty persists. They fear that such teachings may pressure vulnerable church members into giving beyond their means, possibly deepening their financial struggles.

Despite the backlash, Pastor Ibiyeomie remains steadfast in his conviction that a life of abundant giving attracts divine provision. The conversation his sermon has sparked continues to stir debate over how best to balance faith, financial responsibility, and the principles of Christian generosity.
