Governor Alia declares Benue under siege as terrorism escalates

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has declared that the state is under siege from terrorists and bandits, stressing that the ongoing violence has gone beyond the familiar herder-farmer clashes.

In an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Governor Alia described the recent attacks as highly coordinated operations carried out by terrorist groups, marking a disturbing shift toward organised guerrilla warfare.

According to the governor, intelligence reports received on a daily basis indicate that between 60 to 65 percent of the information proves to be credible and accurate. He noted that these attacks are not random but rather calculated, as the perpetrators often strike under the cover of darkness and retreat swiftly, making it extremely difficult for security forces to apprehend them.

Alia’s statement comes amidst a wave of violence that has swept across multiple local government areas in Benue State, resulting in the deaths of many residents and widespread destruction of property.

He emphasised that the situation demands immediate attention and a robust response from both state and federal security agencies.

The governor called on the federal government to increase its support and intervention efforts, noting that the magnitude of the threat facing Benue is too great for the state to handle alone.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging citizens to remain vigilant and cooperative with security operatives.

Governor Alia’s alarming assessment of the state’s security situation underscores the urgent need for a coordinated and sustained effort to combat terrorism and restore peace across Benue.
