On Friday afternoon, June 6, 2025, a devastating fire broke out at the Farm Centre GSM Market in Kano, destroying dozens of shops and causing significant financial losses for traders.
The Kano State Fire Service has attributed the cause of the fire to a battery explosion.
According to a statement by the Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the fire started around 12:32 p.m. in a one-storey building within the market.
The ground floor was severely affected, with 20 permanent shops and 13 temporary stalls destroyed. The fire quickly spread to the upper floor, where another 13 shops and one temporary stall were also consumed by the flames.
Firefighters, led by the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, responded swiftly to the emergency.
Teams from multiple stations across the city were deployed, and five water jets were used to contain and eventually extinguish the fire. Thanks to their efforts, the fire was prevented from spreading to adjacent structures, and no lives were lost. There were also no reported injuries.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Fire Service urged market traders and the general public to handle batteries and other electrical equipment with care. They emphasised the importance of adhering to safety practices to avoid similar disasters in the future.
The fire in the GSM market has raised renewed concerns about fire safety in markets, especially those dealing with electronics. Authorities are expected to intensify efforts to enforce safety regulations and conduct public awareness campaigns to reduce the risk of such incidents.
