The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, Mr. Emmanuel Adie, over allegations of financial misconduct and administrative irregularities.
The decision followed a thorough investigation by the legislative house, which uncovered evidence of mismanagement of public funds and abuse of office.
According to the assembly’s findings, the suspended chairman allegedly diverted funds meant for community development projects and failed to properly account for allocations received by the council.
Lawmakers expressed concern over the negative impact of these actions on grassroots governance and service delivery to residents of Bekwarra.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, will remain in place pending further investigations and possible prosecution if the allegations are substantiated.
The assembly has directed the vice chairman of the council to assume leadership responsibilities during this period to ensure continuity in governance.
Speaker of the assembly emphasised that the legislative body would not tolerate any form of corruption or dereliction of duty by public office holders. He reiterated the assembly’s commitment to upholding accountability and transparency in local government administration across the state.
This development has sparked mixed reactions among residents of Bekwarra, with some welcoming the decision as a necessary step to sanitise local governance, while others expressed concerns about potential political motivations behind the suspension.
