The Kwara State Government has announced Monday, July 7, 2025, as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1447 AH.
The decision was confirmed in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Communications, Mrs. Bola Olukoju, on behalf of the state government.
The public holiday declaration aligns with the sighting of the new moon of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq urged Muslim faithful in the state to use the occasion to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah, the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Mecca to Medina, which symbolises sacrifice, faith, and perseverance.
The holiday will allow residents, particularly the Muslim community, to observe the day with prayers and religious activities.
Government offices, schools, and public institutions across the state will remain closed, while private businesses are encouraged to comply with the holiday declaration.
Islamic scholars in the state have called for peaceful coexistence, unity, and continued prayers for the progress of Kwara State and Nigeria as a whole.
The government also emphasised the importance of tolerance and harmony among all religious groups in the state.
The announcement follows similar declarations by other states in northern Nigeria, as the country joins the global Muslim community in commemorating the Islamic New Year.
The Kwara State Government reassured residents of its commitment to upholding religious and cultural values while promoting inclusive governance.
