Insecurity in Benue prompts transport company to warn against night travel

Benue Links, the Benue State-owned transport service, has issued a security advisory urging motorists and passengers to avoid night journeys along major roads in the state due to worsening insecurity.

The warning follows recent attacks by armed groups on highways, particularly along the Makurdi-Gboko and Makurdi-Otukpo routes, where travellers have been ambushed, kidnapped, or killed.

The transport corporation’s management stated that the decision to restrict night operations was made after careful assessment of security threats and consultation with security agencies.

“The safety of our passengers and staff remains our top priority,” a company representative said. “We strongly advise against nighttime travel until the security situation improves.”

This advisory comes amid growing concerns about rising criminal activities in Benue State, where armed herdsmen, bandits, and kidnappers have intensified attacks on communities and travellers.

Several commercial drivers have reported close encounters with armed men who block roads at night to rob or abduct victims.

Local security experts support the transport company’s precautionary measure, noting that darkness provides cover for criminals to operate. They have called for increased security patrols and military checkpoints along vulnerable highways.

While the travel restriction may inconvenience some passengers, many residents have welcomed the move as a necessary safety measure.

The state government has promised to work with security forces to restore safety on the roads, but until then, travellers are being urged to complete all journeys before dusk and remain vigilant during daytime and night trips.
