Buhari’s leadership style is slow but methodical — Garba Shehu

Former presidential spokesman Garba Shehu has offered insights into the leadership approach of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, characterising his governance style as deliberately measured rather than impulsive.

Shehu addressed public perceptions about Buhari’s pace in decision-making during his eight-year administration from 2015 to 2023.

Shehu explained that what some interpreted as slowness was Buhari’s preference for thorough deliberation before taking action. “President Buhari believed in careful analysis rather than rushed judgments,” Shehu noted, adding that this cautious approach stemmed from the leader’s military background and personal discipline. The former media aide emphasised that this methodical style helped prevent costly mistakes in critical national matters.

The commentary comes amid ongoing assessments of Buhari’s legacy, with supporters praising his anti-corruption stance and infrastructure projects, while critics highlight challenges in economic management and security during his tenure.

Garba Shehu maintained that Buhari’s thoughtful pace was particularly evident in major appointments and policy implementations, where he often took time to evaluate all options.

Responding to questions about whether this deliberateness affected governance efficiency, Shehu argued that the approach ensured stability, especially in complex matters requiring long-term planning.

He cited the implementation of social investment programs and infrastructure development as examples where Buhari’s careful planning yielded results.

Political analysts suggest this reflection provides context for understanding Buhari’s administrative philosophy as Nigeria continues to evaluate the impacts of his presidency.

Garba Shehu’s remarks offer a defence of the former leader’s governing style while acknowledging that different leadership approaches suit different national circumstances. The discussion continues to shape conversations about ideal presidential leadership qualities in Nigeria’s evolving democracy.
