The Yobe State Government has ordered the immediate but temporary closure of three major weekly markets in Katarko, Kukareta, and Buni-Yadi as part of strategic measures to strengthen ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
The decision was announced through a statement issued by Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (retd), Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Yobe State Governor.
According to the statement, the temporary shutdown was implemented for operational reasons to enable security forces to conduct proactive engagements that would enhance safety in the affected communities.
The measure aims to support military efforts in achieving critical security objectives that will improve the overall stability of the state.
While acknowledging the potential economic impact on traders and residents, the government emphasised that the decision was made in the public interest.
“This temporary measure, though challenging, has become necessary for the success of our security operations,” the statement read. Authorities assured citizens that every effort was being made to expedite the military operations to minimise disruptions to local livelihoods.
The state government appealed for public understanding and cooperation, stressing that the collective sacrifice would contribute to lasting peace and security in Yobe. Residents were reassured that the markets would reopen as soon as security objectives were met, with officials promising to work toward a swift resolution.
This development comes as security forces intensify operations across northeast Nigeria to dismantle terrorist networks and restore stability to the region. The government has urged community members to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies in their efforts to maintain peace.
