A deadly Israeli airstrike targeted the Al-Baqa Cafeteria, a popular seaside cafe in Gaza City, killing a Hamas operative along with numerous civilians, including artists, students, and children.
The attack turned what had been a lively gathering spot into a scene of devastation, leaving behind a deep crater and shattered lives.
Before the explosion, the cafe was filled with patrons enjoying tea, scrolling through their phones, and even celebrating a birthday.
Witnesses reported that a Hamas operative, dressed in civilian clothes, had quietly taken a seat in a corner shortly before the strike. Moments later, an Israeli bomb hit the cafe, reducing it to rubble and sending survivors scrambling through the wreckage in search of loved ones.
“The scene was horrific—bodies, blood, screaming everywhere,” one witness recounted. Another described the aftermath as “total destruction,” calling it “a real massacre that breaks hearts.”
Among the victims were a female boxer, a footballer, cafe staff, and young students. Gaza’s Shifa Hospital received dozens of casualties, with at least 40 confirmed dead by Thursday, including those who later succumbed to their injuries.
A hospital official reported treating 72 wounded, many requiring emergency surgery, while also recovering severely burned and dismembered bodies from the blast site. The strike has drawn condemnation from humanitarian groups, who emphasise the disproportionate toll on civilians.
