Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly refuted allegations of corruption, pointing to his financial stewardship while in office as evidence of his integrity.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program, Obi revealed he left N36 billion and $150 million in state coffers when his tenure ended – funds he claimed he could have easily misappropriated.
The 2023 presidential candidate was responding to questions about his inclusion in the Panama Papers leak and broader concerns about his trustworthiness.
“A thief doesn’t leave behind what he was meant to steal,” Obi stated, challenging critics to thoroughly investigate the offshore accounts allegations. He vowed to lead an aggressive anti-corruption campaign if elected president, emphasising that leadership requires setting ethical standards.
Obi defended his governance record in Anambra, listing fulfilled campaign promises including education reforms, healthcare improvements, and rural infrastructure development.
“I delivered on my pledge to transform education – we eliminated school disruptions and established multiple nursing schools where none existed before,” he said. The former governor stressed that his administration’s financial prudence enabled these achievements while leaving substantial reserves.
Addressing polarised public perceptions about his suitability for Nigeria’s presidency, Obi maintained that his transparent governance style speaks for itself. He invited scrutiny of his Panama Papers connection while reiterating his commitment to accountable leadership.
“When you don’t steal as a leader, and ensure your family doesn’t either, you establish the right tone,” Obi remarked, presenting his Anambra legacy as a blueprint for national reform.
Peter Obi’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about political accountability in Nigeria, with Obi positioning himself as an anti-corruption standard-bearer ahead of future elections.
