The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced plans to enhance aerial surveillance and reconnaissance operations across the South-South region’s airspace as part of intensified security measures.
Air Vice Marshal Sunday Anake, the Air Officer Commanding of NAF’s Mobility Command in Yenagoa, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu in Calabar.
Air Vice Marshal Anake reaffirmed NAF’s dedication to bolstering security in the state, noting that surveillance flights would be particularly concentrated over sensitive locations.
The announcement came in response to an appeal by Cross River’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Odey, who represented Governor Otu during the meeting.
Dr. Odey acknowledged recent joint security operations, including the clearance of criminal hideouts in waterfront areas, but highlighted operational challenges in the region’s intricate creek networks.
“The Nigerian Navy faces difficulties accessing some creek areas due to narrow tunnels,” he explained. “We believe aerial support from the Air Force would significantly enhance security in these hard-to-reach zones.”
The deputy governor emphasised that air surveillance would complement ground and naval operations, particularly in remote areas where traditional security access remains limited.
He also commended the Air Force’s existing contributions to regional security and pledged the state government’s support for upgrading the Air Force Primary School in Calabar. Describing the initiative as vital, Dr. Odey stressed that improving the school would benefit both military families and civilian children, reinforcing the state’s commitment to quality education.
The planned escalation of NAF operations underscores ongoing efforts to address security challenges in the South-South, with aerial reconnaissance expected to improve intelligence gathering and operational efficiency in the region’s complex terrain.
