The Nigerian Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has revealed details of a high-level discussion with the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, regarding recent changes in visa requirements for Nigerian travellers.

The meeting, held on Monday, follows the U.S. Embassy’s recent adjustment to its visa policy, which now restricts most non-immigrant visas, including tourist and business credentials, to single-entry with a three-month validity period.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Tunji-Ojo described the discussions as “constructive,” noting that the session was attended by key Nigerian immigration officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap.

The talks focused on fostering stronger bilateral relations through a well-structured visa framework, with particular emphasis on reciprocity and procedural transparency.

Ambassador Mills provided insights into the revised U.S. visa protocol, explaining that the adjustments align with global practices to maintain the integrity of the visa process. He also commended Nigeria’s newly introduced e-visa system, describing it as an innovative step toward simplifying entry procedures for foreign visitors.

Both parties agreed to enhance collaboration between the U.S. Mission and Nigerian authorities, particularly in areas such as secure document issuance, visa overstay prevention, and information sharing on security and criminal records.

Tunji-Ojo reiterated the Nigerian government’s commitment, under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, to ensuring compliance with international travel standards, including measures to verify traveller identities and curb visa violations.
