Joe Igbokwe knocks Nigerians celebrating over Buhari’s death

A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has strongly criticised Nigerians who have expressed joy over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing their behaviour as disgraceful and foolish.

The condemnation comes amid mixed reactions across the country following the announcement of Buhari’s passing on Sunday by President Bola Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

Reports indicate that while many mourned the former leader, some citizens openly celebrated his death, blaming Buhari for economic hardships experienced during his presidency from 2015 to 2023. Videos and social media posts showed pockets of jubilation in certain areas, with critics accusing the late president of policies they believe worsened poverty in Nigeria.

In a strongly-worded Facebook post, the APC chieftain, identified as Joe Igbokwe, questioned why some Nigerians would mock the dead, reminding them of their own mortality. “Our stupidity is reaching a point of no return,” he wrote.

“We’ve added another terrible character to our tradition by rejoicing over death as if we’ll live for a thousand years. This ugly and horrible behaviour must stop.”

Igbokwe’s statement reflects growing concerns about declining respect for the dead in Nigeria’s political discourse. The former president, who passed away in London after a brief illness, is scheduled to be buried today in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, following the arrival of his remains in Nigeria.

Joe Igbokwe’s remarks highlight the deep divisions in public perception of Buhari’s legacy, with supporters remembering his anti-corruption stance and infrastructure projects, while critics focus on economic challenges during his administration.
