President Bola Tinubu has declared that the historical narrative of the Yoruba people would have remained incomplete had he not won the 2023 presidential election.

The President made this assertion on Sunday while speaking at the 8th-day Fidau prayers for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away recently at the age of 91.

The late monarch, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers with 64 years on the throne, died just hours after the announcement of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s passing.

Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, maintained a decades-long friendship with Buhari dating back to the 1980s. During his tribute, President Tinubu revealed the crucial role the traditional ruler played in his political journey, particularly in the lead-up to the 2023 elections.

Tinubu recounted how the Awujale had personally blessed him and encouraged him to contest the presidency, assuring him of victory. “Our history would not have been complete if I had failed in the last election,” the President stated, emphasising that his electoral success was significantly influenced by the late monarch’s spiritual and moral support.

The President’s remarks highlighted the deep cultural and political connections between Nigeria’s traditional institutions and modern governance structures.

The simultaneous passing of both Oba Adetona and former President Buhari marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s contemporary history, representing the departure of two influential figures who shaped the nation’s political and traditional landscape across multiple decades. President Tinubu’s remark on the 2023 presidential election underscored the enduring importance of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s sociopolitical fabric and their role in shaping the country’s democratic processes.
