The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has cautioned against the registration of underage persons and foreigners in the upcoming Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, describing such acts as criminal offences under the Electoral Act.
Agboke issued the warning during a voter education visit to the palace of the Olowu of Kuta, Oba Hammed Adekunle Oyelude Makama, on Wednesday.
He urged community leaders and stakeholders to remain vigilant and ensure only eligible Nigerians participate in the exercise, which begins in August.
“The registration is free and must not be monetised. Do not allow minors or foreigners to register, as doing so is punishable by law,” he stated. The REC also warned against double registration, another offence under the Electoral Act, and explained that the exercise allows eligible voters to correct errors from previous registrations.
Agboke disclosed that online registration would commence on August 18, while physical registration and biometric capturing would begin on August 25 at INEC offices across the state. He emphasised the importance of voter registration, noting that without a Permanent Voter Card (PVC), citizens cannot participate in elections.
While acknowledging the 2026 governorship election in Osun, Agboke stressed the immediate priority of the CVR campaign. He urged traditional rulers to mobilise their communities, describing them as critical stakeholders in ensuring credible elections.
The REC assured that INEC would engage more with traditional institutions as the election approaches.
