Ex-lawmaker criticises FG’s choice of KWAM 1 as airport security ambassador

Former House of Representatives member Dachung Bagos has strongly opposed the Federal Government’s decision to appoint Fuji musician Wasiu Marshal (KWAM 1) as an ambassador for airport security protocols.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme on Thursday, Bagos warned the move could encourage inappropriate behaviour among travellers seeking similar recognition.

Bagos argued that rewarding KWAM 1’s controversial airport conduct with an ambassadorial role sets a dangerous precedent. “With all the drama, now he is an ambassador, meaning everybody will start moving with flasks, doing drama to become ambassadors,” he stated.

The former lawmaker also criticised the government’s consideration of Ibom Air passenger Comfort Emmanson for a similar role despite her alleged aggressive conduct toward flight crew and security personnel.

The ex-legislator emphasised the need for improved passenger education and stricter enforcement of airport regulations rather than rewarding violators. “No matter the explanation, the perception of Nigerians is that it is entirely wrong,” Bagos maintained regarding KWAM 1’s appointment.

The Federal Government had announced KWAM 1’s ambassadorial role on Wednesday, following his August 5 incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport where he publicly challenged security protocols.

The decision has drawn widespread criticism, particularly coming after the Emmanson case, where a passenger allegedly assaulted a flight attendant during a Lagos-bound Ibom Air flight.

Aviation analysts have joined Bagos in expressing concerns that such appointments could undermine rather than strengthen airport security culture. They recommend focusing on clear consequence systems for protocol violations and better public awareness campaigns about aviation safety regulations.
