Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (Rtd.), the revered Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, has passed away at the age of 81. The royal leader, known as Gomo II, died in London on Sunday after a brief illness, according to a statement from his family.
Born on October 24, 1943, the late Emir had a distinguished military career, enlisting in the Nigerian Army on December 10, 1962. He trained at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, United Kingdom, and was commissioned as an officer on July 25, 1963.
Rising through the ranks, he held several key positions, including Commander of the Brigade of Guards during General Murtala Mohammed’s administration and Military Governor of Bauchi State in December 1983.
After retiring from the army, Maj. Gen. Sani Sami returned to his hometown and ascended the throne as the Emir of Zuru. Known for his discipline, simplicity, and dedication to tradition, he earned widespread respect for his commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of his emirate while fostering development in the region.
The Zuru Emirate Council will announce funeral arrangements in due course. The Emir of Zuru’s death marks the loss of a leader who seamlessly bridged military service and traditional rulership, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and service to Nigeria.
