The Lagos State Government has officially announced Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Isese Day celebration.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the work-free day for all public servants in recognition of the cultural significance of the annual event honouring traditional religious practices.
In a circular issued by Head of Service Huiel Bode Agoro (Ref: CIR/HOS/’25/Vol.I/064), the state government directed all ministries, departments and agencies to comply with the declaration.
The notice was addressed to key government officials, including the Deputy Governor, House Speaker, Chief Judge, commissioners and local government chairpersons.
The holiday forms part of the administration’s commitment to preserving indigenous heritage and supporting traditional institutions.
“This reaffirms our dedication to promoting our indigenous culture, tradition and heritage while strengthening traditional institutions across Lagos,” the circular stated. Normal work activities will resume on Thursday, August 21, at 8:00 am.
Isese Day celebrates the rich cultural legacy of Yoruba traditional religion and its practitioners. Lagos State has progressively institutionalised the observance in recent years as part of efforts to recognise the contributions of traditional belief systems to the state’s sociocultural fabric.
The declaration enables public servants to participate in various cultural activities planned across the state. Accounting officers were instructed to ensure widespread dissemination of the information to all MDAs.
This marks another step in Lagos’ efforts to balance modern governance with preservation of indigenous traditions and values.
