The Anambra State Government has taken decisive action by dismissing eight operatives from the Agunechemba Security outfit following their involvement in the brutal assault and public stripping of a female corps member, Miss Jennifer Elobor.
The announcement was made by Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, during a press briefing at the agency’s headquarters in Awka.
Emeakayi detailed that the government moved swiftly upon receiving reports of the incident, which occurred on Tuesday.
The security operatives were allegedly pursuing suspected cultists when they attacked the corps member, an action described as completely outside their official mandate and utterly condemnable. The dismissed officers are set to be handed over to the police for prosecution, underscoring the administration’s firm stance against misconduct.
Emphasising a zero-tolerance policy towards unprofessionalism and brutality, the government has initiated a full investigation to ensure accountability, despite appeals from the victim’s family and NYSC officials for a quieter resolution.
This move is intended to serve as a strong deterrent to other security personnel. In addition to disciplinary measures, the state government has covered all medical expenses for the victim, replaced her damaged belongings, including a laptop and phone, and issued a public apology to her family, the NYSC, and the general public.
Emeakayi stated that this unfortunate event will mark a turning point for comprehensive reforms within the community security apparatus, aiming to restore public trust through a renewed commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights in all security operations. Efforts to obtain confirmation from the state police regarding the handover of the operatives were unsuccessful as the Police Public Relations Officer did not respond to inquiries.
